Palmento Costanzo, Nero di Sei Etna Rosso DOC 2015
A fantastic volcanic wine, made from vines between 30 and 120 years old on Mount Etna (Nerello Mascalese 80% and 20% Cappuccio). The characteristically light, brilliant ruby colour belies the concentration and persistence of this wine’s aromas of cherry and red berries, with its distinct hints of rock and smoke, intricately fine tannins and luminous acidity. The finish is long, with a pleasant nutty-bitter note of almonds. Note (or better: smell) the label, which incorporates actual volcanic ash from Etna in its design. Organic wine. 14%. Drink now to 2025.
Serving suggestions: Despite the light colour, this is an intense wine requiring rather strongly flavoured food, ideally with some umami component to match its ‘rockiness’. Mediterranean vegetable, mushroom or fish dishes, pastas and hard cheeses all work very well.
Ratings: Gambero Rosso Italian Wines 2018 Two Glasses for the 2014 vintage
The Costanzo family has restored an old palmento, the traditional Sicilian multi-level cellar, on the northern slopes of Mount Etna. Their vineyards are located between 600 and 800m and include an exceptional parcel with pre-phylloxera vines well over 100 years old. Viticulture is organic and winemaking within the palmento artisanal traditions. Two lines are produced, the classic Mofete and the fabulous Sei expressing in their depth and elegance all the unique character of Etna wines.
